    Usually I get a message to update to a new wp version but this time it did that automatically for me, is that how its supposed to be since its a maintenance update?

  • Yes. Automatic minor updates were introduced in WordPress 3.7, so 3.7.1 will have been an automatic update. Major updates (eg to 3.9) will still need to be triggered manually.
