I’m evaluating the free version of BetterLinks. I think having the ability to shorten links from the editing screen is fantastic. The redirection ability works well (pretty fast) but the core feature — a shortened url — is not working at all.

I have v3.1.1. I have “Enable Random URL Slug” enabled. But my original url, such as “mysite.com/my_long_post_slug” remains. I was expecting something like “mystic.com/go/XyZ12”. Am I missing something?

    Hi @upstateny,

    Hope you are doing well.
Sorry to hear that you are facing issues.

Firstly, please note that the latest version plugin is: 1.3.1 (Free) and 1.2.2 (Pro).

However, after enabling the “Enable Random URL Slug”, if you are checking with your existing links or importing any links from CSV then it will not work as you are asking.

But after enabling the “Enable Random URL Slug”, if you create any new link then it will work perfectly. Check this screen record.

Hope you understand. Let us know if you have any other queries.

    Thanks!

I hope I correctly understand your explanation. My workflow is to input a target url (from the editing page ) while writing a new post. A that time, the post URL is “https://mysite.com/?p=273898”. When published, the URL becomes “https://mysite.com/2022/04/test-2/”. This is even though I enabled random URL slug. But if I created the shortened URL from the “Add New Link”, the shortened link works.

I was attracted to BetterLinks because it allowed me to create a shortlink within the editor, and not require interrupting writing to switch to BetterLinks, go to the Manage Links page, click on “New Link”, enter the target URL, copy the shorted link, go back to my editor, past in the shortened link.

Without this feature, BetterLinks is no better than PrettyLinks, or another basic link shortner.

    Hi @upstateny,

Sorry for the inconvenience and the late reply.
Thanks for describing your issue more clearly. I have checked your mentioned issue. It seems you are telling me about the permalinks option and that’s why the URL got changed when you published your post.

Currently, the Random URL Slug will work only on the newly created links from BetterLinks > Manage Links. We didn’t add this feature to the Gutenberg Editor.

However, thanks for your valuable suggestion. Obviously, I will discuss this with our Team. Hopefully, they will take the necessary steps on this and will add this feature to our future version plugin. Once we have added this feature, we will inform you. Don’t worry.

    Have a good day!

The ability to create a shortened slugwill be a welcome addition. Until that time, I will adapt to the added step. Thanks, again.
