• Hi

Are footnotes automatically renumbered if you insert some text with a new footnote in it? For example, if you have some text with 3 footnotes numbered 1 to 3, and you insert some new text with a footnote between footnotes 1 and 2, is the new footnote automatically numbered 2 and the former footnotes 2 and 3 renumbered 3 and 4?

I have downloaded the Modern Footnotes plugin and installed it, but I haven’t been able to get it it to work yet.

    Thanks

    Hello,

Yes, footnotes get renumbered as you describe. Footnotes will be numbered sequentially, starting at 1, according to the order of the footnotes, even if you go back and add in a new footnote in between two footnotes that already existed.

The footnote shortcode has an option to override the number that is displayed if needed, but it is not used by default.

Ah many thanks Sean. That’s great news.

As I say, I have installed the Modern Footnotes plugin, so I now have to try and work out why I can’t get it to work. It’s probably my fault. I have been using the Classic Editor for many years and am struggling to transition to the Gutenberg one.
