• I hear that permalinks are backwards-compatible, so to speak… that I can change the slug on a post and the old link will still go through. I tried it out and it seems to work well enough… my question is–under what circumstances would this kind of thing break? Upgrading the software? Upgrading the permalinks from the options panel? I can’t seem to dredge up any documentation that explains this any further and, essentially, if I am going to rely on it, I would like to know how it works…

Simply put, how robust is the new feature? Can I rely on links redirecting in the future, or will the slug forwarding get wiped anytime I update my permalinks? Anyone?

I am just setting up my WP blog and would like to know this too.

Xander, Is the redirecting built in, or are you talking about redirection via Dean’s permalink migration plugin?

Right now, when I change the page/post slug, WP successfully redirects. When I change a category, it does not, so there are limitations to the build-in redirection.

I suppose that in an ideal world I could change the category slug and have the same behavior take place as with the page/post. I wonder if this is in the pipe for future WP versions?
