Using the auto update to 3.0.3 went smoothly. However, upgrading this time did not go so well. It failed.

    Wait. It gets worse.

When it failed it left the message, “Under maintenance…” remained as the only thing a visitor to the site would see.

Downloaded 3.0.4 and upgraded manually. Now the site is back up, but the admin area still shows that the upgrade failed and suggest another go at it. If the link to take another go at upgrading is clicked it shows that the latest WP version is installed.

Is there a way to get the message at the top of the admin screen to show that the latest WP version is installed? It’s important to know when the updates are available.

  • I’ve got my blog back! My domain host discovered my ISP had blocked the IP of my website. They got it unblocked and everything is back with no loss of data… I also have a new banner running across the top of my Dashboard. It says,

“An automated WordPress update has failed to complete! Please notify the site administrator.”

I hesitate trying to update again… I’ll review the posts here and figure out how to do it manually (after I back everything up!).

    Thanks for all the assistance!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Most hosts have a safety switch where someone tries to log in in ftp or server with wrong username and password more then 5 times then the ISP IP address get blocked until the host activates the IP Address.

    ebokkchronicles,

Are you installing from WP 3.0.3? If so, you shouldn’t have an issue replacing the wp-admin & wp-includes folders and the files that are in the root directory of WP (index.php and the wp-XXXX files). I usually don’t bother uploading the wp-config-sample file.

If it is an earlier version of WP you may also need to update the DB. A good idea is to always export the DB. You can find export under Tools.

    Ipstenu,

The reason I’m suggesting the test link before auto updating is that it prevents a permanent “Site under maintenance…” page that replaces the normal home+ pages. You and I can recover quickly because we know what to do, but there are plenty of people who will be scrambling trying to figure out what has gone wrong. In the meantime their site(s) are gone from view.

I just spent a couple hours studying exactly how WP upgrades. The maintenance file is deleted only after the upgrade is complete. If the upgrade fails, the file stays. This HAS been thought out. But we’re wandering into esoterics and off topic ??

ebookchronicles – It’s pretty safe of an upgrade, even from 3.0.1 ?? Make backups.

Are you prompted for a username/password when you run the auto-upgrade? If not, I wonder if somehow it’s got an old (and bad) password combo in there.

    Ipstenu,

I’m not clear as to the ‘maintenance file’ you’re referring to. Is it the file that generates “Site under maintenance…” that you’re referring to?

Don’t know about the others, but I’ve been curious as to the process that WP follows when updating. (I don’t mean to suggest in anyway that the code developers for WP haven’t thought it out. Then have and that is one of the reasons WP has such a great reputation.)

The only thing I’d like to see is avoiding the panic experienced when an auto upgrade fails and the ‘maintenance’ page is displayed. For the less experienced it’s a moment of terror that could ruin their day.

Would you consider sharing what you’ve learned in a narrative form in your blog? If so, please share the link.

Yes, it creates a file called .maintenance (literally, that’s the file name) that calls it.

*heh* I’m working on it, but it’ll be my first code post of 2011, since this week is ending with a good book and a great girl ??

    Have a Happy New Year!

Looking forward to your post. Please add link to it in this thread.

    Thanks

I tried using my FTP connection and it won’t let me in either.

    srinivvaskatam,

Govpatel’s post probably has the solution to your problem.

.maintenance is hidden file like .htaccess so allow hidden file to show and just delete the file

auto upgrade complete, site showing but cant login to admin panel. after renaming plugin folder can login on but again problem create when tried to install some essential plugin. not any other problem showing. What to do?

after renaming plugin folder can login on but again problem create when tried to install some essential plugin.

Using Ftp or server after renaming the plugins folder you need to create a blank plugins folder and then log in once you logged in admin panel go back in ftp and delete blank plugins folder you created and rename original back to plugins folder.

Deactivate all plugins and then activate one at time to see the conflicting plugin that is creating the problem.

Onnoysomoy you have a different error. You have a plugin that is incompatible with the new version of WP.

Open a NEW topic with what that plugin is, and tag it so the plugin devs get alerted.

When trying to WordPress Autoupdate, make sure that you FIRST:

    0. Delete the Upgrade folder completely from your server
    1. Go into your Plugins page
    2. Click the checkbox above all of them to select ALL plugins
    3. From the pulldown, select DEACTIVATE, then OK it
    4. Try the update again – that usually takes care of the errors for me.
    5. Don’t forget to re-enable your plugins as in Steps 1-3

@jpneok Hey, your tips does work on my site! THANKS! I’ve been try to upgrade to v.3.04 in vain.. but ur tips save my time to upgrade manually!
