The auto update seems to have made my site regress….

I lost weeks of changes I worked on, including many posts.

I understand that I can upload my backup (and hopefully that will work), but what I don’t grasp is HOW and WHY the update could make my site “go back in time” and look like it did weeks ago.

    Examples of what I lost:
    – I made a new page and linked a menu item to that page, removing the previous one. Now the previous page is linked like before & there is no evidence of the new page.
    – many, many blog posts
    – several new menu & sidebars

It seriously looks like I had not even made these changes. I almost felt like I am losing my mind and the last several weeks of work had not happened….

Concerning my back-up….do I need to just upload the whole thing to my ftp or can I just upload the parts with the changes I had made?
I am not sure what folder posts & pages are located in….

    Thanks!

  • When you make changes to a theme, ALWAYS use a child theme so changes won’t get lost because of an update.

Please read my actual post before making a comment and offering advice that doesn’t apply.

I didn’t lose any changes to my theme. I DO have a child theme and changes to that are NOT what I lost.
I lost POSTS, a PAGE and a MENU that are not any different from ones I created before, which are very much still there. It is as if the past month simply did not happen….a page I had made a draft is now published again and links I had reordered in a menu are now in their past order.

Looking in my ftp, the site has regressed back to May 3rd. That is the latest file date modification.

WordPress’s core update system does not have the capacity to regress sites to older versions, but some hosting providers’ auto-updaters (we don’t control those, and they’re usually part of their auto-installers) do restore whatever backup they have on hand when their auto-updater breaks the site.

This sounds like what happened in your case, so I recommend contacting your hosting provider and asking the following questions:

    1. Did your auto-updater system recently update my site?

    2. Was there a failure that resulted in my site being reverted to its May 3rd state?

    3. If so, would you please detail what the failure was?

    4. Do you have a more recent backup for my site?

Meanwhile, have you been keeping your own backups?

^ Thank you for the answer. I will contact them.

Yes, I have my own updates and am currently trying to restore my content.

    I figured. ??

Please let us know if you need any help with that.

Ok…that was it…a server failure. Just a weird coincidence that this occurred around the wordpress update. Our host told me they will restore the site with my recent backup, so I will let them do it.
I can’t believe they didn’t bother to notify me of this though…. /rant

Awesome, at least you’ll be back on track soon with a much more recent update. A shame about the lack of notification from them though, seems like that would be somewhat important.
