I preface this by saying, I am an end-user. I know some html, css and how to push ‘update now’ buttons.

    Problem:
I updated three of my themes to 4.0.1. Now, the auto-sizing feature in the media library no longer works in any of the three themes. The full size image is fine, but the medium and thumbnail images are digitized, throughout the website.

    Here is an example:

    and

This link shows a screenshot of what is happening in the media library (on each website):

The full-size images are loading correctly and beautifully, but the thumbnail image in the media library is showing them as distorted/digitized. And as previously mentioned, when I try to downsize them automatically, to medium and thumbnail, they are digitized, almost posterized. I do not know enough to find the problem.

    The commonalities are as follows:
    Wordpress 4.0.1
    Woothemes
    Mavericks OS 10.9.1
    Bluehost ISP/shared server

Can anyone help me resolve this issue? Thank you.

Woothemes tech support tested the sites and their result indicates it is in the wordpress 4.0.1. core.

Activated Twenty Fourteen > deactivated all plugins > saved permalinks > plugins activated one by one, deactivated each time > a new image added in the media library each time and a new post created with the new image and its auto-downsized versions, medium and thumbnails > activated Scrollider > deactivated all plugins > permalinks saved > plugins activated one by one > no posterized images > logged in and out of site > no posterized images >
Logged out of site > Logged back in > Images and downsizing working.
