Auto Expand for Child Headers

Just got a wordpress and noticed in the 2011 theme, when you had a long child header, wordpress would automatically expand to accomidate that long list. but for 2012 theme, it will show the list as far as there is a page and then it cuts it off. any idea how I can get the 2012 theme with that special feature?
