auto add woocommerce digital purchaser into private buddypress group

I sell digital items from my woocommerce store and I am looking for a way to automatically place people who purchase those items into private Buddypress groups for the item purchased (for content/chat visibilty restriction purposes).

I’ve tried the Groups extension by woothemes but it didn’t do what I had hoped. It did sort people who purchased items into particular groups under the Users dashboard tab, but nothing as far as integration with Buddypress groups.

Is there a way to integrate the two? I was looking at BP Premium but it seems like the woocommerce item type changes from a digital download (in my case) to a membership. I still need the purchaser to be able to download the item they’re purchasing.
