Hi. I am currently building a shop for a client who sells fresh fish to eat. They would like for customers to be able to order online, authorize the charge and then capture it later. I know this can be done on WordPress using Woocommerce and Stripe/woocommerce payments gateway. The issue is that the end price may vary from the original authorization charge due to weights/cuts of fish…will they be able to capture more than authorized? less then authorized? Does it have to be the exact amount?

I checked out a different seafood type store and by their checkout they have a note saying that there will be a pending charge on the customers card for double the amount and then once the order is complete then it will go back to normal and they will charge the amount. I am assuming they are doing this for the same reason above. Does anybody know if i can do something like that>

    Thank you!

    Hi there,

    Thank you for reaching out!

I understand that you’d like to know whether it is possible to charge more or less than the authorized amount with Stripe for WooCommerce or it has to be the exact amount.

With Stripe for WooCommerce, it is only possible to charge the same amount or less. The products in the order can be adjusted before authorizing the charge:

    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/stripe/#section-39

So if your customer adds the maximum possible amount and charges less – that should work.

Charging double the amount of the product price would most likely require code customization as this is not something Stripe for WooCommerce is capable of by default.

    I hope this helps!

@grigaswp thank you for your reply. Is it possible with the new WooCommerce Payments or other payment gateways? Thank you.

    Hi there,

WooCommerce Payments works with Stripe in the background and it is also possible to capture the charge later:

    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/payments/#section-9

I’m not aware of any payment gateway extensions which could be used to charge more than the authorized amount though – that will most likely not be possible out of the box.

    I hope this helps.
