Author username not displaying

I noticed on my site that the “the_author” tag doesn’t show the author.

I noticed it first on bbpress, thought it was happening there however after a re-install the problem is still there, even activating a different theme doesn’t change anything.

I’m using BP 1.5, BBP 2.0 as the main system with WP 3.2.1, I’ve tried removing all custom functions and removed all plugins one by one and the problem persisted.

You can see that author links work, just not the author name, meaning no links are shown.

I don’t remember editing any of the core files, but tried replacing all core from a fresh download of WP and still the same.

This is really annoying me as I just cannot figure out what is causing it.

I’m hoping that someone might have an idea on what could be causing this, at this point I’m considering just starting everything from scratch, and really don’t want to do that.
