Author Avatar

I would like to show author avatar of each posts near the title of the posts in index.php. The size of the image must be 40px x 40 px. Is there any code or any plugin to show such avatars near the title. Even I am a experienced Blogger, I don’t find solution for this. Any help would be appreciated!
