Author archive page is indexed although setting is off for empty archives

We noticed that archive pages without posts are still indexed by Google while the setting is correctly switched off in the Author archive settings.
The author is not included in the sitemap, so that’s correct, but in the page source there is this code:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://mysite.nl/author/my-user-name/" />
instead of
<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow"/>
the second piece of code is shown when author archives are completely switched off or if I disable indexing in my user profile.My guess is that it’s related to the recent schema data changes. It’s happening on all sites I’ve checked, they are all updated, no other SEO related plugins, etc.
