• I am new to Word Press and completely technologically incompetent. I’ve read the responses received to the same problem I’m having but I have no idea what php.ini means or where to even find that. I have just begun to help with technology at my church and had no part of setting up the website so I have no idea how it runs. I am trying to upload an audio file and am being told it’s too big. Can anyone give me the “how to change the file size limitations for dummies” version? I can’t even tell you what version of word press the site is using.

  • Hey woollau,

Wow, you’ve bit off quite a task here. ??

First, I’d advise you to figure out what company hosts your website and contact their support. I say this not to push you off, but because different hosts have different requirements and limits on their hosting and they should be able to help you tweak this setting in php.ini, if that’s what’s needed.

For the record, php.ini refers to file in your hosting account that initializes or influences exactly how PHP runs on your server. PHP being the scripting language that a lot of WordPress core uses.

If you can get into your hosting account via FTP or a hosting control panel, you can look in your web directory to see if there’s a php.ini file and, if so, I’d advise you to back it up before you edit and try to add settings.

There are other ways to increase file size too, like using the .htaccess file (see links below).

Here are a few links that may help:

I’m sure that was probably way too technical, so my first suggestion would still be to ask their host if they can help you.

The problem is, that since each host has different rules, you could make any of the prescribed adjustments only to find they’re not working as you expect because of hosting limitations.

    I really hope that helps.

    eric
