attribute as options

Hello,

I am creating a store to sell tableware – each product needs the ability to have two sets of optional extras, a motif (100+) and gilding (gold or platinum) giving:

plain plate (1)
plain plate + motif (100)
plain plate + gold gilding (1)
plain plate + platinum gilding (1)
plain plate + motif + gold gilding (100)
plain plate + motif + platinum gilding (100)

this obviously gives loads of variations (303)

1) is there a way so that the attribute can be selected as an option, rather that having to link up every variation, so that the price of the plain plate is displayed along with an add to cart button before selecting any attribute? ..so the attribute are optional extras?

I have tried adding a “none” option to both attributes sets “(none, gold, platinum) but this shows the wrong image when using for example “any motif” as the ‘none’ option then shows a picture with a motif as you can’t choos “any motiff except [none]”
