• First up – Yoast SEO is brilliant – I love it!

My CPanel came with Attracta SEO and I noticed it modified the robots.txt file. The Yoast SEO sitemap has been submitted through Google WebMaster Tools.

The question I have is: with the modified robots.txt file does this mean any Robot will be redirected to the Attracta sitemap or will my Yoast SEO sitemap still work as well?

    Thanks!

  • Good question, I just encountered this as well. Have you found any answers?

You should never use two different sitemap plugins at the same time. This *will* cause issues. Either turn off Attracta or turn off the sitemap feature of WPSEO.

Any tips on how to turn off Attracta? It came with my Hostgator hosting from what I can tell. I see something with Attracta in it in my robots.txt file when I clikc ‘edit files’ in Yoast settings, but it says ‘do not remove’.

    Ask your host.

They said they cannot help me. Think it would be safe to delete this from my robots.txt file? It’s the only thing in there:

    sitemap: https://cdn.attracta.com/sitemap/905987.xml.gz

#Begin Attracta SEO Tools Sitemap. Do not remove
    sitemap: https://cdn.attracta.com/sitemap/1415101.xml.gz
#End Attracta SEO Tools Sitemap. Do not remove

Ia m not familiar with Attracta, so can not advise you about it.

You can remove those lines but if you use Attracta again it will rewrite them.
I’m not sure if Attracta does an automatic scan that will add them.

I don;t think it will do any harm at all leaving those lines. I have sitemaps in Google Webmaster tools in addition to the Attracta one and they are shown as crawled and indexed regularly. In addition, posts I make (I just made one) show Google being pinged straight after and visited the WordPress SEO sitemap.

Thanks for the feedback. I have closed my free account with Attracta, which I assume means they will not re-submit a sitemap and rewrite those lines in the robots.txt file. If I delete the lines, do I need to replace with something else, or is it ok to have an empty robots.txt file?

Thanks in advance for any help, folks!

The usual for WordPress as a start is:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Disallow: /wp-includes/
