I run DDJGames.com. I reinstalled WordPress today after some malware issues, and when it was done, everything was screwed up. As you can see, the theme does not appear at all (although it is still there in the directory). More importantly, I can’t login: when I go to the login page ddjgames.com/b/wp-login.php, I receive a login page with no formatting. After entering my username and password, I receive the error that “Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”

I have no idea how to fix this since I can’t even get into the admin pages to change anything. Earlier, I was able to get into the admin pages (but the formatting/theme issue was still present), and I attempted to stop the redirect to the /b/ subfolder by changing those options, but I haven’t been able to get back in since.

I also attempted a fresh WordPress install in a new directory pointing to the same database, but that never succeeded even at loading the unformatted page.

    Help?

  • Check your wp-config file for anything odd, also .htaccess via where your website is hosted (with a file manager or via ftp).

When you say “anything odd”, what do you mean? I restored the both the .htaccess file and the wp-config.php file from a clean version I had backed up, so that should be good.

Of course, it could be that I was wrong about them being clean, so what should I check those files for?

Fixed it — apparently it was the problem in the WordPress general settings. Because I didn’t have the right address for the WordPress directory, it wouldn’t correctly redirect me to the site pages.

The trickery that it took to fix that problem was insane.

I should of been more clear about “anything odd”, but usually I search for the text string base64 to see if there is any odd functions hidden in my theme files/wordpress directories.

Most times checking settings is the first thing to look over when a problem occurs, as I can recall a number of times spending entire days realizing a certain check box was never set to cause certain pages not to render properly.

Yeah — the problem in this case was that I couldn’t actually access the settings. The settings believe that the WordPress files were in the root directory when in actuality they were in /b/. I could access ../b/wp-login.php, but when I clicked to actually login, it would try to access ../wp-login.php and fail. So, I could never get to the settings.

I ended up having to write a bunch of rewrite rules to (a) correctly login, (b) redirect to the options screen after logging in, and (c) correctly send the options fix to the right page once submitted.

For future reference, if the directory in the settings does not match the actual directory, how are you supposed to fix this issue?
