I am looking for feedback on the proper setting for Media & Attachment URLs.

I have the search set to no and the page to redirect to the image url but when I click on the actually attachment page the Yoast SEO has a menu that reads “Should search engines follow links on this Media? and the default setting is YES. The menu that reads Allow search engines to show this Media in search results is set to NO as I would expect. Just wondering why the NOFOLLOW isn’t also set with the NOINDEX.

Also if I have had attachment pages indexed before I discovered this setting would Webmaster tools be my only option to have these pages removed from search?

    Thank You

We recommend that you redirect the attachment page to the attachment itself. Attachment URLs are often thin and low-quality pages with just the image and some titles and short descriptions, but often it is not very relevant or useful to the user.

It doesn’t automatically set it to nofollow as there are times when you would want a page not to show up in the search results, but you would still want to signal to Google to crawl and find the other links on that page. To learn more about this, you can refer here — https://yoast.com/which-pages-noindex-or-nofollow/

If you set it to redirect to the attachment itself, those attachment URLs would eventually be dropped from the search results once Google is able to crawl your site a couple of times since it finds that it has a noindex tag and is being redirected. However, there is no exact way to know when this will happen and it might take some time before this happens.

This is still a very confusing topic to me.

Should this be set to YES?

If it is set to yes does this mean images will be shown in Google search results?

I just don’t understand what setting this to YES does.

It would be nice if Yoast could answer this.

    Select ‘yes’, or select ‘no’?

    Yes

    No.
