• In an attempt to try and clean up my media library, I saw that most of my images are “unattached.” I am learning that “unattached’ doesn’t mean unused. It got me thinking though – is there any benefit to having them attached vs. unattached?

Attached means that the image was uploaded to a specific post or page while writing or editing that post or page.

The advantage is that when moving your site via WordPress’s export/import system, only attached images will be brought over.

Interesting. I thought I had uploaded them to specific posts/pages. Is there any reason they would not be? And, are there advantages to not having them attached? Just curious if I need to go through the steps of attaching them.

If they’re uploaded via Media > Add New, or a plugin that doesn’t handle attachments, they’re be unattached.

There is no advantage to having them unattached.
