Attach to Post Type list doesn't include my Custom Post Type

    I’m trying to create a custom post type and a custom taxonomy to go with it.

    I made a custom post type called “Downloads”. But when I go to make a custom taxonomy, “Downloads” does not show up in the list for “Attach to Post Type”. I can attach it to “Post” and it works, but then it shows up twice — under “Posts” as well as “Downloads”.

    How do I assign the custom taxonomy only to the custom post type, and not have it display anywhere else?

    I’m assuming you have left the downloads post type as not public, which is going to be the caveat for the taxonomy part. If I recall right, that section only queries for the public post types.

    My first question, if I’m accurate, is why is it needing to be a non-public post type? If you’re worried about it showing up on the frontend for users, it’s going to take manual code tweaks to make it queried for, so you’d have complete control over that aspect already. However, I will let you explain the reasoning and we can go from there for how to perhaps best solve the intention at hand.

    Your support is top-notch, Michael. Thank you. I switched the post type to public and then it showed up in the list.

    My reasoning for a non-public post type… I’m assuming that if it’s a public post type, then the individual post’s URL is publicly accessible. I’m not interested in having that exist, despite the low likelihood of someone accessing it. Each post will get lumped into my sitemap and search engine crawls, right? Am I misguided?

    Regarding humans, they’d need to know where to find the posts. Regarding bots, you could easily tell them not to index the post type archive, and I wager WordPress SEO plugin has a checkbox to do just that as well, if you’re using them.
