Lately I’ve been noticing that I get auto response emails from different mail providers saying that the address h*********[email protected] (yes, that’s what it actually says, with all the asterisks) doesn’t exist. When I check my orders, I’ll see a failed order with exactly that email address. All orders are fine with the real email address, but then every now and then, I get an email address like k*******[email protected] not being valid.

it appears someone is typing random email addresses or (more likely) is using an account dump file to generate test orders. Since they fail, woocommerce sends a “failed order” email, which then bounces and I see that bounce error email in my inbox.

my question: how can I block user registrations, orders and notification signups for email accounts that contain an asterisk?

to pre-empt the suggestion: no, I do not want to do email verification and I don’t want to block free mail providers. I just want a way to prevent emails with * in them.

  • Hi @

    Thanks for reaching out!

no, I do not want to do email verification and I don’t want to block free mail providers. I just want a way to prevent emails with * in them.

I understand your concern about the failed order notifications due to invalid email addresses. Blocking registrations from email addresses containing asterisks can be achieved with a bit of custom coding.

This is a bit of a complicated topic that would need some customization to address. Unfortunately, custom coding is not something we can assist with directly. However, I’ll keep this thread open for a bit to see if anyone from the community can lend a hand.

If you have any other questions related to development or custom coding, don’t hesitate to reach out to some of the great resources we have available for support. The WooCommerce community is filled with talented open-source developers, and many of them are active on the channels listed below:

Should you wish to consider a plugin to block spam registrations, you could check the following extensions below:

    • reCaptcha for WooCommerce – Protect your eCommerce store from malicious and automated attacks by using reCaptcha for WooCommerce.
