Assign tags in page data to checkbox items

I’ve added my checkbox items to the Search field, and need to now assign those checkbox names to the data in my page.
I have a list of engineers with multiple areas of study. The user needs to find an engineer based on different disciplines, so I created the checkbox filter. How do I make their directory listings show up when certain checkboxes are checked?
Also, the formatting in the search field is messed up – checkboxes are left-aligned, item names are right-aligned, and the items don’t line up with their respective boxes.
