When I try to use asset optimization, I get “It seems that we are having problems with our servers. Asset optimization will be turned off for 120 minutes.
cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 150001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received.”

    Hi @edoswald

I hope you are doing good today.

There could be multiple reasons for this issue. In the first place, this could be a plugin conflict. Would you please run a conflict test? Please deactivate all plugins except the HUmmingbird one and check if the problem is gone. If so, then enable all plugins one by one and find which one is having a conflict. If there is no positive result, switch to the default WordPress theme like 2019 and see if it works.

Before this test, we recommend full site backup or running this test on a staging site.

Also, please check is there any server-side cache that you can clear and see if this helps.

Please let us know about the results.

    Kind Regards,
    Kris

Hi I was able to find two offending plugins thanks to that (I never thought of a staging site before to test things like this without causing havoc on the front end for users, thank you for that now have one!). And oddly enough, it appears to be Smush Pro causing the issue, along with KeyCDN’s CDN Enabler. with both off, the cache fills up, with either on, nothing.

My version of Smush Pro is the newest version. Not the pro version of Hummingbird though, just the free one.

    A little more information

The cache directory completely disappears (it’s only the page cache, other cache directories are unaffected)

    Hi @edoswald

THe CDN Enabled plugin is “a content delivery network (CDN) integration plugin that rewrites URLs, such as those serving CSS, JavaScript, and images, to be served by a CDN.”

This means it changes the way CSS, JS and image assets are handled on site which is also exactly what Hummingbird’s Asset Optimization does and – for images – Smush CDN does if enabled.

This would cause conflicts as there’s no any special integration between those and that means that they do attempt to handle same files “independently”.

You could possibly exclude JS/CSS that’s processed by one of them from another one but, in my opinion, that’d be as good as simply disabling one of the plugins. I’m not that familiar with CDN Enabler to do comparison but Hummingbird gives you quite a granular control over Asset Optimization (especially if you switch to manual mode), it also provides caching and plays well with Smush, including Smush CDN.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

I was able to do what the CDN plugin did without a plugin, so that’s now off and removed, but it hasn’t fixed the issue. The problem still remains as long as Smush Pro is an active plugin. Once I deactivate Smush Pro, the cache works.

I’ve looked through settings on Smush Pro for something that might conflict. Here are the individual settings I have on Smush Pro.

    CDN – off
    Local WebP – on
    Lazy Load – on
    Gutenberg integration – active
    Image Resize Detection – inactive

    Using standard config
    Smush Pro 3.9.6
    Hummingbird Free version 3.30

I’m stuck on what it could be causing the conflict, as the CDN is off within Smush Pro, and there’s no other caching settings within Smush Pro that I can see. So I guess I should transfer this issue over to the Smush Pro support threads? That appears to be the issue, even with KeyCDN’s CDN Enabler plugin completely removed.

The only theory I have right now is there’s some code conflict between the free version of Hummingbird and the paid version of Smush. I just took a look at the error log and the last entries are from months before the plugin was installed, so no clues there.

    Hi @edoswald

    Thank you for response!

The Smush CDN doesn’t affect Hummingbird caching and/or asset optimization and it’s only aimed at images.

There are no known conflicts between these two plugins (Smush Pro and Hummingbird free) but there’s always a chance that there’s something specific that we are not yet aware of.

If you can fully confirm that simply enabling Smush Pro is causing this then yes – please reach us out at wpmudev.com regarding support for Smush Pro and we’ll assist you there.

    Kind regards,
    Adam
