Are you able to create your own theme?

Hey there, I’m new and I’ve tried editing the Kubrick theme to my liking and ‘am having trouble with, but what I want to know could I start my own theme from scratch, without having to edit another theme? Links to tutorials, and any kind of help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance ??
