Are Drag and Drop Page Builders worth it?
-
I see more and more Drag and Drop themes. Some seem very nice and I am tempted to use them for my clients. But I hesitate. I don’t want to go for a snazzy short term solution that will be problematic in the long run.
It seems to me that many of the drag and drop themes defeat the purpose of using a CMS because if you switch themes later, much content will be lost. Whereas the nice thing about pages and posts is they will still be pages and posts.
I’ve been thinking that perhaps it all depends on how the theme was built. If it’s all widgets, I’m guessing that would be an issue. But if it is using custom posts, then in theory that content would still exist as custom posts if one chose to switch to a different theme down the road. Does that sound right?
I’d like to hear opinions and feedback from other developers who have more experience with the drag and drop themes like Divi or Enfold. I’d mainly hope to hear from you if you’ve switched themes for a site that was built using drag and drop. Did you have problem? Did you lose content?
My main question is about the long-term (like 5 or 10 years) risks of using a drag and drop theme builder.
Do you think my theory above holds water…that it depends on how the theme structures the content to be dragged and dropped?
I appreciate any insights from experienced developers on this topic. Thank you!
