• Hi all, I have a wordpress site with 5 categories keyword + vehicle type.
I am now going to add sections for Car makes (200) and individual cars (11,000). My idea is to have each car make a category and then have the individual cars within those categories. I want to update all the sections so what do you think, is wordpress up to the job or is 200 sections for car makes too much?
    Thank you

Thanks ipstenu I’ve now seen that in total I have 315 car makes! So that would make 315 categories!

I can split these down into personal use and public use car makes but obviously some makes are going to have family cars and trucks. Or I can split them into car types (motorbike, family car) but this will also present the same issue with some car makes having both motorbikes and family cars.

What is the best way to organize this data taking into account those considerations? Thank you

Stupid question from someone who has only owned one car…

How are you defining car ‘make’? I’m assuming you’re using the traditional american way of ‘Make == car company’ basically, but … My knee jerk thought was ‘There are that MANY!!?!’

Family cars (i.e. compact, sedan, station wagon) would be a TAG, I think. Which would work for motorcycles and trucks as well. Though god knows how you differentiate between a pickup truck and the semis…

Make = car company, yes there are a lot but it is for all private AND public vehicles!

In my db I already have the vehicles organized by Public, Private vehicles, Car types (motorbike, family cars). In theory I could just have all the vehicles in the car type categories instead of having car makes but then I would miss having all the car makes categories. It would be easier to have only 7 car type categories than 300 car types. Maybe I can have 300 car types organized in car types- but that would be flawed as different car makes have cars in various car types.

    Hmmm…

Yeah, it’s somethign that requires a lot of thought :/

Car ‘type’ may be a better category, and then move Make, Model and Year in tags.

So a post for ‘1905 Ford Model-T’ would have:
    Category: Family, Car
    Tag: 1905, Ford, Model-T

And a ‘2001 GMC Mack Truck’ would be:
    Category: Private, Truck
    Tag: 2001, GMC

    Maybe?

So have two categories per post, is that possible? Or are you talking about sub categories? Cheers

You can have as many categories as you’d like assigned to each post. Categories are a lot like tags, they’re just handled a bit differently from an organizational standpoint.

Think of categories as featured tags.

    I’m a newbie and I love new words…

It seems to me that this would be a very important time for you to learn more about ‘taxonomies’ in WP. (I didn’t check out each post above – but I didn’t note the word being used)

I stumbled upon the below video and it has been a life-saver! This guy covers categories that you can add (in a slightly different way than simply adding a category). It is very much worth checking out before you complete adding all your 11,000 items or nailing down how people find what is where in your db.

Thanks for the help all. I read all about taxonomys and have decided to put the 11,000 entries as posts in the wpposts table. The question now is where the tags go in the db tables for posts?
