Archive URL strategies

My guess …..
The same title could cause problems, and as blogs grow, the possibility that an entry may be identically titled grows.
That the url is somehow linking to the db, and therefore the full information is required.
But I could well be wrong ??

Google does not have a preference for shorter URLs. The same title can cause problems if you don’t have other differentiators. The date is useful because simply by looking at a link you can get a lot of information about it. Context is important. It also implies a structure.

if like me you love to add a “quote of the day” entry with that exact same name each time, the date makes lots of sense ??

and WP gives u enough power to get the small URL if you want too.

it records dates well. falter on the post names!

Google works fine for me reaching the end of the archive link… my #1 entry (with over 1000 hits from Google searchers since I posted it) is https://www.ryanwaddell.com/archives/2004/1/14/why-is-nicole-ritchie-so-much-more-popular-than-paris-hilton/ so I would say google doesn’t have any problem with it ??

Ah, interesting stuff.
And definitely a good point regarding the often not-unique titles.
Along these lines, something that would seem to be cool and make sense would be a special “URL title” field, so that blog authors could affirmatively choose a reasonably short and/or unique title.
For instance, I have a goofy entry on my blog entitled “And when I sit around the house, I really sit AROUND the house.” That’d be hellishly long for a URL! And even if WP could automatically truncate it, that’d be uncool, because what use is “and-when-i-sit.” Blah.
Instead, I’d like to be able to give it a short name, like, “being-fat” so that it’d become:
/archives/2004/being-fat/
… so the URL would capture more of the essence of the post while still remaining short.
Is this already currently possible?
If not, do you think it’s something that could be easily added?
What are your thoughts about this?

Any news about this great feature for archiving? Someone developed it?

Is this a upcoming feature in 1.2 alpha, or did I miss something in 1.0.2 ? Post slugs… Cant even figure what that could be when I try to translate it ??

Yes, it’s in 1.2. Basically it allows you to enter a shorter title for use in rewriting the URL, although it defaults to the title (or 255 characters of it.)
