• Hello, I recently changed to the Aopstrophe 2 theme on because I liked the way the demo showed featured posts as rectangles rather than squares.

I set the tag for featured posts to “featured,” and added the tag to two posts. However, the post grid is just showing the standard square thumbnails.

I have looked through all the support threads for this theme and can’t find an answer. Do I need a static homepage to take advantage of the featured content area of this theme, or am I just missing something in my setup?

    Thanks

  • Hi –

When I look at the page I see squared feature images, not rectangles. Could you take a screen shot of what you’re seeing? Add it here with a third party link from a program like droplr or https://snipboard.io/

You could try using a different browser to see if that changes anything for you.

    Thanks for replying.

I see squares as well. That is the problem. Featured posts should have images that are two columns wide as shown in the demo.

Instead, my featured posts are displaying the same square image as other posts.

    Hi there,

To get those rectangular featured posts you need to use images with a 2:1 ratio. You can crop your images to that ratio and then upload them and set them as featured images.

Hi, Thanks for responding. The photos I uploaded are cropped to the exact ratio of 2.06 to 1 that is given on the theme instruction page. I’ve also set “featured” to be the tag that marks featured posts, and tagged two posts with the word “featured.”

Ok, so taking a look under https://www.themodelshipwright.com/tag/featured/

The images there are not 2:1. That could just because you’re using a separate featured image from the displayed images though.

Would you please give us direct links to the files you’re trying for featured images here? One or two will be fine.

Thanks to everyone spending time to help on this. The rectangle images is a small issue, but it’s why I picked the Apostrophe 2 theme.

These are the images I uploaded as feature images for the two posts I tagged featured.
If I click on them from the edit post page, they show square, but when I call them up from the media library they are the proper rectangle shape.

I think I figured out what’s the issue. As you can see from the theme demo (https://apostrophe2demo.wordpress.com/) you can only have one wide featured image per row. If you put two wide images one of them will be displayed wide and the other square. If you have three, then all of them will be square cropped.

What that means is that if you want to have some of your images displayed in a rectangular crop, you need to set an even number of featured posts. An odd number of posts will generate only square thumbnails.

Thanks for the info. I went back and made sure the following two posts were the only ones with the tag “featured,” and the only two with rectangular cropped featured images:

    https://www.themodelshipwright.com/2015/03/29/scratch-building-a-plank-on-bulkhead-ship-model/

I cleared my browser’s cache and reloaded the page, but I’m still getting just 12 square images. I even deselected the “Also display tagged posts outside the Featured Content area” option in the featured content tab just as another possibility, but no change.

I think it may be time to look for a different theme.

It looks like none of those posts is featured. Try removing and re-adding the featured tag and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for responding, and taking the time to look at the site.

I had selected the option “Do not display tag in post details and tag clouds,” Which is probably why it appeared they were not tagged “featured.”

I tried removing the tag, updating, and then adding it back in and updating again. Still no rectangular images.

    Hi there,

That option shouldn’t make any difference, no. Your site is not loading the Featured Content area at all – I can’t even see it in the page source code in the browser inspector.

In the Customizer, can you take a screen shot for me of what appears in the Featured Content tab, and share it here using Snipboard?

Thanks for looking at the site.
Here is what I see when I open the Featured Content tab:
    https://snipboard.io/ZuU8ze.jpg

Hmm, that’s definitely the same tag as what’s used on the actual posts.

Featured Content is a feature added by the Jetpack plugin, and I suspect the problem might be that the data Jetpack has for your site is not correct, so it’s not picking up on the featured tag you added.

I’ve started a full sync for your site with Jetpack, as it appears that hasn’t run in a while. Give it 24 hours to complete, then check if the featured content appears. If not, we’ll try something else ??

I just checked your site again, and see it’s still not working, so it’s not a Jetpack sync issue.

One thing it doesn’t look like we’ve tried yet is check for a plugin conflict. It doesn’t look like you’re using many plugins, but can you try temporarily disabling all plugins except Jetpack and see if the featured content section appears then? If it does, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.
