• As a precaution against spam I went to the OPTIONS/DISCUSSION and changed “hold the number in the que if it contains more than 5 links” t0 “2 links”. This was suggested elsewhere as a preventive measure.
Since then, all comments have had to be approved before they show up. I changed the setting back to “5” but that hasn’t made a difference. Both boxes under “Before a Comment Appears” are UNchecked.
Any ideas as to why I now have to approve everything?

  • Is there a blank line in the ‘Spam Words’ box ? (Usually at the end)
Such a line will cause this to happen.

I had one reference in the ‘Spam Words’ box. I’ve deleted it for the time being and made sure there were no other blank spaces. I’ll see if this works.
    Thanks….

Regarding this topic, i added the suggested words by the wiki to my spam words.
The problem is I get messages not displayed and waiting for authorization. This happens even with words that are not listed, does it recognize parts of words to ban?
For instance, i had “sexo” (which is spanish for “sex” duh) banned, but I got a lot of comments banned when writing about a Movie title that has the word. Since most of the spam is in english I deleted “sexo”, and kept “sex”. Same thing, comments still get banned.
Same thing happens with other words.. what is the process WP uses to select banned comments?.. Is there a way to change it from banning the message to just changing the word for “censored” or something?
    thnx

havok: I have just renamed my comments.php and all the calls to it as suggested somewhere here a while ago. It worked a treat. Although oddly there seemed to be a pause during which one slipped thru but now I am spam free.

Mmm… root, i couldn’t find the post you were talking about.. i searched for “rename comments.php” and “comments.php” but didnt seem to get it..
could you give me some more info on the post?.. thnx.. ??
