• My first post to this forum and my first blog, so I’ll let you know up front I’m pretty ignorant of the finer points and how they operate.

Now, my situation…I downloaded and installed WordPress via the download manager my hosting service has set up (a service called Metropolis), would now like to use the Akismet plugin, but am being told I need an API Key.

Where do I get this key? I’ve read about where to find it in my dashboard, but there is no key there, or at least not one I can find, so I assume that I need to “apply” for a key from somewhere. I have not been able to find any place to do that…could someone please direct me to the right place or at least point me in the right direction?

  • Sign up for wordpress.com and then you’ll receive your API key.

You need to signup for an “account” at wordpress.com since that is where you get an API key. You can signup for a free blog as well, but just signing up for an account is sufficient. There will be a welcome email with the API key or after signing up head over to:

Hello and thank you jeremyclark13 and Trent,

So I go to WordPress.com instead of www.remarpro.com to signup for an account to get my key?

Thanks again for all your help!

That is correct! It is the hosted version of wordpress (wordpress.com) run by Automattic that gives out the API keys!

Trent, thank you so much! I’ll go get that done right away and continue on my journey into blogdom.

    Sincerely,

i am having api key issues as i am trying to post a video on youtube. youtube has two options, hosted and self-hosted.

how do you find the api key if you use wordpress self-hosted?

    i have read this = https://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/

however, i don’t get the prompts, etc. on my dashboard so this explanation does not work for me. i have v 2.1.1

    Read the above.

adam, so all i have to do is sign up and i get an api key that will work for my “self-hosted” blog? same key, two different urls?

It will work with both blogs with the same API key because if worse came to worst, you would just signup with another name and get another anyways ??
