I just started a self hosted blog, hosted and set up through my cpanel with hostgator.com. My blog works great- I can add a post, login to my admin, etc…

I wanted to install the wordpress.com stat plugin, but it asks for my API key. I go into my user profile and I don’t see my API key.

I never recieved an API key though, and my username and wordpresss says that they don’t support me because it is not a wordpress.com blog.

Please help– I went to hostgator, and they had no idea and said that wordpress should support me.

Do I need to set up a new wordpress account with wordpress? If so, how do I link it to my current account and my current blog?

  • You have to sign up for an account at WordPress.com – just get a username.

how do I link it to my new account with wordpress.com self hosted blog?

When I set up a new account it asks if I want to 1. create a new blog or 2. not create a blog–I don’t want to create a new blog, but I want it to link back to my old blog.

    Any suggestions?

There is no such thing as a “wordpress.com self hosted blog”. WordPress.com is a service that allows you to sign up for a free blog, run on their servers and using their rules. www.remarpro.com allows you to download the files and host the site wherever you choose.

If you want to use Akismet on a wordpress.COM account, you already have it automagically hen you create the account and gt a blog. if you’ve downloaded the files and installed them on your own server, then you can simply sign up for a *name* at www.remarpro.com and they’ll give you an Akismet key to use on your self-supported site. To get the key, you need to log into your wordpress.com account and go to your profile. creating an *account* is not the same thing as *getting a blog*. You can get a blog, or you can just get a name. The key is right there. Copy it and put it in your own hosted site’s area.

Choose “2. not create a blog”, then go to your wordpress.com profile and get the API key. Copy and paste it into your own blog.

do these 2 accounts have to have the same username/password/email address?
