If you’re talking about Akismet, then you need to sign up for a wordpress.COM account. That’s DOT COM. You don’t have to use that to actually host a blog if you don’t want, you just need it to get the API Key.

There seems to be a delay in issuing Passwords. I registered, as per plugin instructions @com, last week. Still haven’t received my password to get a key.

I registered again today – no email password for activation.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    Hi KatGirl –

I haven’t – I got an API key for a client in about 2 seconds. I have an unused API key if you want it…. email me….

Hi vkaryl – sorry for the delay.

Your spare key would be welcomed. Apologises if I sound like an idiot but… your email address is…or where…?

    thanks heaps.

    Kat

    Hi KatGirl –

Thought it was in my profile, guess I better check! vkaryl *at * bytehaven *dot * com….

    Thanks. Emailing now…

Help! Created an account, with password and email – wordpress does not recognize me and keeps telling me my email account is used. Have looked at WordPress docs, no help. Can’t get Api key – won’t recognize me or let me change anything – or add another account! What to do – no support from WordPress since I have another host!

I expected my WordPress email, which has my username, to also have my API key. Instead it calls it a password. And when I enter the password, it doesn’t work – I get an message saying API key invalid try again. I’m sure I have the right combination of 6 letters and numbers, but it won’t work, despite numerous careful entries.

Well, gang, looks like we all have questions, but no one out there has answers!

Your password is a password. Use it with your wordpress.com username to log in to your wordpress.com account. In there, you will find your API key.

If you really have too much trouble getting Akismet to work, I’d suggest the following plugins as an alternative:

    Bad Behavior

    Spam Karma 2

And as a general note, you’re more likely to get a response if you post your own question in a new thread rather than adding it to the end of an existing one – people watch out for unanswered posts, and might easily miss one like this.

I also applied for an account and my response was immediate but the link to activate my account gives as error “Invalid Activation Key” and I can’t get support from them since I host my own. ????

What link to activate your account? Did you actually log into WordPress.com and get your API key?

After you get your wordpress.com account, go here:
    https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/profile.php

and sign in. At the top of that screen will be text like this:
Your WordPress.com API key is: 123412341234. Don't share your API key, it's like a password.

Only with your real key. That’s your key, not anything else.

what if someone shares a key, will it work for all? I still don’t get it why an API-KEY,since WP is totally free, why they try to keep people from self hosting with it.
Besides for non wordpress.com bloggers, they sign up just to get the key, why bother not to share it.
