" Anyone can register" grayed out – even with plugins disabled & default theme

  • I have been testing several plugins for a blog which has a membership section (S2Member) and user-generated content (Contributor user roles).

    Have been using plugins like Advanced Access Manager to limit the capabilities of the Contributors.

    But now I find that I can’t register new users anymore, and the ” Anyone can register” option under General has been grayed out – can’t (un)select it anymore.

    Disabled plugins and restored default WP theme – no results.

    How to fix this?
