Any post queries code in a template, when linked that template gives error!

Besides if not more descriptive above in topic title, My problem is that when i reference the template page using anchor tag it doesnt work. Moreover i have used have_post(), the_post() in that template page and the template page is assigned to the page i have created at backhand say page1. I tried to link the template page as below:
<a>/display.php">click</a>
-display.php is a template assigned to page1 page.
-when click is clicked Error generated: Fatal error: Call to undefined function query_posts() in C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\wp-content\themes\blanktheme\BLANK-Theme\display.php . plz do help me with this concept.
