I am using Redux since version 3.x. as part of my theme. I remember back then with around 4-5MB the plugin was already quite big.

Now I just updated to the latest version 4.x and I realized the size is ~25MB. Not only that but WordPress slows down noticeably and the the memory usage is double that from version 3.x

WordPress core itself is 55MB with ~3000 files, my own theme is 1.2MB with ~80 files, most plugins are around 2-6MB and have less than 300 files. Yet this goliath of Redux amounts to a massive 25MB with ~1500 files.

I love Redux and all the work that went into. I donated several $100 to Dovy in the past to help with the customizer support. I also understand that redux is not your everyday plugin that just adds one feature but is a full framework. Don’t get me wrong, I am not concerned about running out of hard drive space, however I am using the plugin size and file count as a measurement to narrow down plugins that cause high RAM and CPU usage and Redux is unfortunately one of them. Not only that, but Redux now took a direction away from simply being an option framework, to also implement Gutenberg Blocks with a ton of templates. This really turns Redux into bloatware for many theme developers who were only interested in the options framework. Asking my theme users to install a 25MB plugin that offers a 1000 features when only 10 features are needed, makes it hard for me to justify the usage of the plugin.

For that reason I was wondering if Redux is planning on releasing a light version that just includes the original option framework?

    Thank you for reading.

For the record, it was Dovy who took Redux down that path. Then he sold it to Extendify. There won’t be a lite version. You can sort of make your own if you’re embedding (properly embedding, I should point out, as people tend to do it wrong). If done properly, the template libraries may be safely removed, leaving only the framework portion. That said, going the embed route means having to stay current on updates (easily done via composer).

I wish I had better answers for you. Good luck.
