• Why is there an anoying Firefox update message being dispalyed on the WP 3.2 dashboard? And how do I get rid of it and no don’t tell me up update my version of Firefox — that is just not going to happen, unless Red Hat or CentOS decides to build FF 4 for RHEL 5 / CentOS 5 — *I* am just NOT going to download and install it (which probably won’t work due to the versions of GLIBC, etc. on my CentOS 5.6 box) or attempt to build it from source (far more hassle than it is worth).

  • Can we assume then that you are actually using the browser located on the server itself to work on your site? That’s not actually a WordPress issue, but here’s how to get rid of it.

Click the screen options tab in the dashboard and un-check the box that says “Your browser is out of date!”

No, the browser on on my home system, which is a Linux machine running CentOS 5.6. I am using the stock distributed browser, which is FF 3.6.18 (I have the most current update).

The problem *I* was having was that Headspace2 SEO breaks the JavaScript on the home page of the Dashboard. Disactivating Headspace2 allowed by to dismis the nag.

I would still like an explaination of the purpose of this nag.

I admire your perseverance. It’s been my personal experience that CentOS/RHEL as a desktop/workstation is both disappointing and frustrating for the average user. Especially if you find that wireless support, multi-media support, and the latest versions of both Linux and add-on applications are both practical and essential for day to day use. Forget about it on a laptop.

I would still like an explaination of the purpose of this nag.

I should think that would be self evident, and the fact that WordPress allows it to be disabled by the end user as a matter of choice seems to make it pretty much a non issue.

Those individuals like yourself, who have experience with the linux versions of Firefox browser, understand that the urgency implied in upgrading Firefox on a Win32/64 platform, may not always mirror that of non-windows OS’s.

Glad you sorted out your javascript issue.

CentOS works just fine, not only on my desktop, but also on my laptop (an IBM Thinkpad X31), wireless and all.

I have been using Linux on both desktops and laptops (in addition to servers of course) since the early 90s. *I* have never used any version of MS-Windows. So I take it the Firefox nag is mostly a MS-Windows issue.

I presume that there will likely be an update for Headspace2 SEO to fix the JavaScript issue.

Why is WordPress telling me my broswer is outdated/insecure?

    Because it is.

If you use a non-supported (or very old) browser like IE 6 or 7, or FireFox 3 or 4, WordPress will tell you, in your admin section, that this is out of date and you should upgrade. Yes, this is a nag screen. No, it’s not going away. Just upgrade if you can, or click dismiss if you cannot.

If you’re stuck on Windows 98, good news! Opera supported Windows 98 all the way up to 10.63 (released less than a year ago) and that can still be downloaded from https://www.opera.com/browser/download/?os=windows&list=all

That’s why. And yes, it IS 99.9999% for Windows. I mean, if you’re on CentOS, you’re probably more secure all around ?? But you still should know that you’re using an outdated browser, and not everything on the site will work correctly. See the other .0001% IS that the Dashboard has bigger needs.

    CentOS works just fine,

Indeed. I am intimately familiar with it. I’m posting this from a workstation using 5.6 and Firefox 3.6.18 right now. But like I say, as a desktop/workstation it is usually both disappointing and frustrating for the average user.

Obviously, you do not fall into that category!

Well, if the patrons of the Wendell Free Library are ‘average users’, then they seem to not have any real problems using (diskless) workstations running CentOS 5.6 and Firefox 3.6.18. Any this includes the library’s head librarian / director (who is certainly not a ‘Linux geek’). I am not entirely convinced that CentOS 5.6 makes for a poor desktop or even laptop environment. I do have various multi-media add-ons installed (pulled from the EPel and RPMForge repos), not that they are really used much. Most people seem to just use Firefox and OO. With a current version of Java (from Sun/Oracle), even the teens are happy to run RuneScape without problems (at least on the machines with Intel video chips).

And what exactly is the ‘.0001%’ that the Dashboard needs that FF 3.6.18 lacks? Aside from Headspace2’s JQuery problems, the Dashboard seems to work just fine with FF 3.6.18? What is missing? Is it real functionality or just ‘cosmetic’?

    @robertpheller

Well, if the patrons of the Wendell Free Library are ‘average users’…
…I am not entirely convinced that CentOS 5.6 makes for a poor desktop or even laptop environment

I doesn’t matter to me one way or the other if you are convinced or not, and that’s hardly the issue here. Frankly, I think you’re now just using semantics in regards to my use of the term “average user”, to cloud the distinction between what I believed we were referring to – someone who is capable of installing and correctly configuring an OS ( like yourself? ) – with someone who simply plops their butt down in a chair and uses the end result.

I’m glad you’re an accomplished enthusiast, but for those who already know what you’re talking about, you’re just preaching to the choir. I’m happy that whatever you are doing for yourself and your library patrons works well for you! That’s part of the joy of possessing the knowledge that allows one to do such things. Best wishes to you, and good luck in your WordPress endeavors!

CJ, it doesn’t matter to ANYONE what anyone else’s preference of desktop or browser is. It’s a personal thing, you gotta respect ’em even when you don’t agree ?? Let us not get derailed on things that aren’t going to change.

The .0001 percent is that … well, a LOT of things have changed from version 3 to version 5. They always do. It’s a case of ‘We cannot be expected to support old versions.’ IE was treated this way, old FF is. if you don’t like it, dismiss it. If everything works for you, great. But if they don’t, that’s on you, and don’t come crying here, basically. ??

oops! comment removed. never mind… I totally misinterpreted what I was reading..
