Ok, I’ve had numerous login issues in the past with wordpress, the slightest change to something and seems the gates get shut :-/ All the past issues have been resolved and I’ve been able to login with no issues for months. However, over the last couple weeks I’ve been having more login problems – more specifically it takes up to 6 attempts before I’m able to login successfully, that’s up to 3 browser sessions as the Sentinel plugin kicks in after the second failed login and freezes my browser forcing me to shut it down manually then fire it back up again.

On a failed attempt, I receive the standard wordpress login error page with the login form and this message:

[Error log moderated as per the Forum Rules. Please use the pastebin]

I assumed it was an issue with the wp_useronline table, but after looking at it I couldn’t figure out what should be changed – if anything. There are also references – mainly in the first entry – to things that should have no effect on the login process (such as the “sinboard” page)…those could just be unrelated errors though.

Anyone got an idea how to resolve this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lee C

    P.S.
Just to add – when entering the username/password I did so manually by typing each character into the boxes, no copy/paste. This is why I know for a fact that the password is identical each time I enter it, whether it fails or succeeds, it’s the same password with each character in the same case.

  • Just so you know, there is no table called wp_useronline in the WordPress core installation. That must be coming from a plugin you are using.

Try disabling all of your plugins and see if you still have this problem. If you don’t, enable them on one by one until you find one that causes this problem to start happening. Then you will have isolated the source of the problem.

Thanks for the heads up, you’ve just made me realise that it sounds like it belongs to the WP-UserOnline plugin, which I am using, and would like to continue using as it’s really useful for showing all active beings on a site (lists them by membership type and shows bots too). If there’s a bug in the plugins code that could cause this I’d prefer to fix it rather than stop using it altogether – but I’ll more than likely need to bug its developer about this…

And to the wordpress staff member who removed part of my post above – I didn’t post any code, it was a simple error message (pure TEXT) to help explain what has gone wrong in this situation…please stop with the dictations!!

I’m not familiar with that plugin’s workings. Usually the issues are not that there are bugs in plugins as much as developers stop adapting them to the latest versions of WordPress. Eventually changes in WordPress cause the plugin to no longer work as it once did.

Looking at the plugin’s page, one of the authors, Scribu, is active in the WP community. You might rewrite your original post addressing it to the WP-User-Online plugin rather than to logging in, in the plugins forum to see if you can get your question answered there.

I will do over the next couple of days. Just came across a modified version of it that claims to work better with Mingle (which I’m also using) but it completely destroys the site layout so I’ll try to get onto the dudes responsible for that one too… ??
