Another clueless person needing update help

Hi
I had some kind volunteer from WordPress initially set my website up for me, so I am sorry to say I just don’t have much idea what’s going on. I am long overdue for an update (currently using 2.3.1) and, of course, have no idea how to proceed.
Earlier today I went to my BlueHost control panel and used the automated backup and SimpleScripts upgrade. Unfortunately, upon visiting my website there was the start-up page you get when first launching a website (the plain blue Just Another WordPress… thing). So I called BlueHost and they fixed everything. The guy I talked to did not understand why that happened and we left it at that. I was just happy to have my site back.
Is the volunteer service still available? I am not sure how I found that in the first place.
