Based on the number of people who are having trouble with this, I have a feeling I shouldn’t have tried it. Anyhow, I started it about an hour ago and it’s been stuck on “Unpacking the update…” for just about that long. So I have these questions:

How long should this take? I have a broadband connection.

    Where is it upacking to?

What are the consequences if I close the connection to the Update page? There is no Cancel button on the page.

At this point I have a feeling I should have been contented with staying at 3.0. I haven’t done any work yet in my WordPress installation.

Well, now it’s been about two hours since I started the auto-update. I have no idea what happened, but my Dashboard is still active and says I’m still at 3.0. So apparently when I tried to upgrade, nothing actually happened.

I’d still appreciate it if someone could answer the first two questions I asked in my original post in this thread. I think I know the answer to my third question, since I have now closed that Update page and there doesn’t seem to be any consequences, thank heavens.

Somehow I carelessly missed the warning about backing up my existing installation before attempting to update to 3.0.1. I should have known better in the first place, but it appears that no harm was done because the 3.0.1 installation apparently hung and never got off the ground.

Try adding AddType x-mapp-php5 .phpto the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

Try adding AddType x-mapp-php5 .php to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

What is this in reference to? What is it supposed to do? Where is the .htaccess file located? I searched for it and found it in this location, where H: is the thumb drive letter:

    H:\xampp\htdocs\xammp\sqlite

Does that make sense, and if so, why?

You’re hosting WordPress locally? If so, your firewall may be blocking the update. Just download WP 3.0.1 and carry out a manual upgrade.

    Okay. Thanks.
