Anatomy of Style Sheets and Templates, A Suggestion
-
A theme has two basic elements, the style sheet, and at least one template. The style sheet is a cascading style sheet (CSS (often CSS3)) document that determines what the theme as a whole looks like, and how it functions globally. A template is an html document (html5 sometimes) that determines how a page will function, and that determines what the page is for. Templates can include
splash page
home page
individual posts
individual pages
custom types
archives
categories
and linksThere maybe others.
A template can have features ranging from just content, to; content, header, footer, and one or more side bars. Each feature can have zero or more widget areas, so one could have a widget area in just the footer if one wishes.
Each “Anatomy Of…” would have a line by line overview of the document, describing what it is, what it does, and how to modify it. So that the Theme Line would have the theme name, what is does, and how, and why, to modify it. Since each document can be lengthy, the Anatomy Of would be lengthy as well.
This is not something that can be done by one person, it will take a team. And a team of people who know what they are doing. Since I don’t really know what I’m doing, I really can’t be a member of any team. Anybody wants to take the lead on this, they can go right ahead.
Thanks for your time.
