    Hi everyone
I am an experienced graphic designer working for a long time in the field. But I am relatively new to blog implementation. Recently I started building my own blogs on my server. Sadly my servers were attacked by hackers who pretty much destroyed everything, it was really touch and go for while. Now they have been restored but, although it seems in most respects they work fine, I can’t seem to be able to update my plugins. I get notification for an update for a plugin, select it and hit the update button. All that happens is that it takes me to an empty dashboard page with the title “Update Plugins” and then nothing at all happens.
I would really like to be able to refresh the entire site, so I was wondering if anyone has a solution for the problem above and if anyone has any suggestions for how to clear old caches and restore the site to it’s earlier functionality. I can not seem to find any reason for this failure to update.
    Thanks you. VM

There have been problems with the plugin directory all weekend, so it probably has nothing to do with your blog.

For now, try manually downloading and installing the updated plugins.

    Thanks James

That’s exactly what I am doing now. I had to physically delete the index.php in my plugins folder, then via FTP delete the offending plugin (SI Secure form in this case). Now I am uploading the new version. But my question in general is wether this happened due to the problems I had with my server. The servers on my host suffered a massive attack from China last week, which took almost everything down. The host’s tech folk spent days plugging the holes. Now that my sites have been restored, I seem to get some left over files in there from the previous set up that are confusing my dashboard. I can not find any tool that would check through and find the bad files. So it seems it’s going to be a decision between uninstalling and reinstalling the whole thing over again or going through file by file to see where the problem lies! It has been harrowing anyway!

    Thanks once more. VM

I doubt it. What you’re describing sounds similar to what many other people have been experiencing. Either way, it’s hard to really troubleshoot with the random plugin directory behavior.

    Try this plugin:

If you have the time, you might as well try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    Thanks again James
I tell you what I did which seems to have done the trick. So a sort of intermediary workaround for now, not quite as drastic as a fresh reinstall, nor a particularly laborious thing to do. I also deleted the plugin index.php, and refreshed my dashboard and now it seems it is behaving normally. I only say seems because I’m not totally sure yet! So I’ll see. Otherwise I think I may end up having to do what you suggest. Fortunately this one is a relatively new site and as yet hasn’t been fully finalised.
