    Hello,

I’m experiencing the same problem that a lot of other users have too. I have the 4.0.1. version, 1&1 host and the max image size set to 8mb.

I tried uploading 7 jpgs at the same time. All between 400kb and 943kb. Only one was uploaded successfully and that one has 514kb.

I have tried re-uploading them several times, I checked my plug-ins…I only have bbPress active, I have tried in Chrome and Firefox and I get the same error message over and over again: “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”

Any ideas of what I might have missed and/or how I can fix the issue?

    Thanks.

Is there any other error being displayed. Maybe something along the regarding a file named image.php?

Did this work before? Did you upgrade and problem started happening?
Have you host check the error log for your service. You could start debugging yourself but having the error log will get you right to the point.

How big are these images? Not in terms of filesize, but in actual image resolution?

Large images require more memory to process. Are these images particularly large?

Is there anything else unusual about them? Are they black and white?

If one image uploads okay, but the others don’t, then something unusual is going on with those other images. Finding out what could help define the problem better.

it may be a theme issue, try going back to the default wordpress theme, clearing your browser cache and refreshing the page to see if that works.

Puh, what a day! Thank you guys so much for your help.

Samuel nailed it. I had saved the images small enough to get the file size down, but they were still incredible large in their dimensions. Now I have a whole lot of resaving to do, but at least I’m finally able to upload images to my site.

    Cheers.

Yeah, a lot of people miss that one. ??

A modern camera taking something like a 12 megapixel image means that there’s 12million pixels in that image. A pixel in full 32 bit color requires 4 bytes. So 12 megapixels = 48 megabytes.

Now, with compression, the image itself can be saved and used in much smaller filesizes. But when you upload the image to WordPress, then it has to load the image into memory, in order to do resizing operations and create the smaller resolution versions of that image. Thumbnails and the like. You can’t do image operations on compressed images, so 12 megapixels = 48 meg of memory needed, plus another 48 to copy the image into. That’s 96 meg just for an image, and it still has to do all the other WordPress stuff.

WordPress attempts to raise the memory limit to 256 MB specifcially when doing image operations, but not all hosts configurations of PHP will allow a PHP process to set its own limits. In which case, you need to either up the limit manually (ask your host) or upload smaller resolution images.

sam, thanks for that ?? you learn something new every day!

    Hello all….

First off, thank you Samuel! I have been pulling my hair out for a couple days on this issue. Resizing the dimensions fixed this is a split second.

So the current WP Media upload screen states the following, which only addresses one aspect of an image size:
“Maximum upload file size: 8 MB.”

Now, would it not seem appropriate that this notification be updated to state any other limitations that obviously exist?
    Maybe something like:
“Maximum image resolution dimensions can not exceed 1000 pixels in any direction.”

It would have saved countless hours of searching and troubleshooting.

    Just a thought…..

people upload all sorts of stuff so just having the max file size covers all the bases, i guess that’s why they’ve not broken it down in the dashboard…

I thought the same thing previously… until I found myself in this situation.

My file sizes were well under the 8MB limit (around 1.7 to 2.0 MB).
However, the resolutions of these same images were in the range of 2900 x 1900, and this caused the uploads to fail.

So I totally agree with your comment about learning something new every day!

I never post in these forums but I had to say a massive thank you to Samuel

I spent hours and hours trawling the web with no luck and Samuel’s information was spot on and with a batch image resize in photoshop I was able to upload every single one of my photos with no problems at all

    THANK YOU!

Thanks for the thread, people. This helped solved my problem but not WordPress’ lazy error message. I had tried to upload some default res iPhone 5 photos, which kept failing with the same error messages. I first tried 990 pixels on their widest dimension and that failed. Then I tried 100 pixels and that worked. A clue ??

And the error message for WordPress’ code is *beyond* lazy.

I am having the same error. I deleted a bunch of photos in the media library besides the ones I am currently using. I went to the saved draft page to try to create a gallery and when I click on the “Add Media” button the media page came up but it is not letting me add new images or view my currently saved images in my library. How can I fix this? I’ve tried everything from re-sizing to deactivating pulgins
