• I run WP on a IIS server…. and have no update directory or .maintenance file in my installation.

That said, the update probably failed due to the lack of permission to write the disk (my hoster).

This message is probably showing up die to a flag set somewhere. in MYSQL?

Q1: how can I reset this flag and stop auto updates?
Q2: one autupdate does not work for me. If i am performing the update manually, how can i minimize the work (not having to upload all the files)? Can I know what are the exact files (changed) that i need to upload?

    Many thanks!

try manually re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
Always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case.
