I get the message “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now”. I installed 3.0 at GoDaddy and keep getting this message in the admin panel. When I try the update again, it will not complete.
    Thank you.

  • you can always download wp and update your installation trough an FTP connection just make sure you don’t overwrite your wp-content folder. if not you need to probably open a ticket with godaddy

What about the database? What do I need to overwrite and what do I need to save from my old site. I have a pretty big site and cannot just re-build it from scratch.
    Thank you.

modifing your files on your server should not affect your database at all your just changing the application not the data. but you can always login into your phpMyAdmin and do an export of your database to be sure but just be sure not to modify your content folder unless you need to update any plug in that is not compatible with your new installation of wordpress

So all I need to save is the WP-Content folder and the database that my site currently uses? Then I install 3.0 manually and just replace the WP-Content folder? Will the new installation connect to the old database? Or does the wp-config file need to be modified too?

    Thank you.

I had all the plugins de-activated before trying it again. I still keep getting the same error.
    Thank you.

Try deactivating all your plugins, changing your theme to the default one. remove all the plugins from the plugin folder install 3.0. replace all files except wp-content, wp-config.php, .htaccess . and then try activating one plugin at the time one of your plugins my not be compatible or your theme.

Should it happen even with all the plugins deactivated though? I am using an Artisteer theme made last year. I do not have a .htaccess file. I deleted that from the db_backups folder as I did not have any special permissions.

Should I try to upgrade with the plugins folder completely removed from the wp-content folder?

    Thank you.

Actually yes you can alway update all your worpress installation just don’t change your upload folder inside your wp-content. Make a back up of this folder because if you modify it your images and all related items are going to loose their links.

delete all your files intall wp 3. clean on the same database and start re-installing plugins one by one

Thanks. I will try the automatic update once again by removing the Artisteer theme file and plugin folder completely first. This way hopefully I will know where the problem is coming from. I did try to re-install with a default theme also which did not work either.
    Thank you.

Looks like the message about the failed installation has disappeared since GoDaddy switched me to their new grid server from the old legacy server.
