• Hello

    I have a blog page that allows comments however I would like to moderate them before there are visible to others. The checkbox for “An administrator must always approve the comment” is not showing in my admin screen.

    I have check boxed all the settings as suggested but I just cannot find that elusive check box. I am using the latest version of WordPress 6.0.2

    I am trying to achieve the obvious > Someone posts a comment > It’s not visible to start with > I moderate it > Authorise it if appropriate > It then becomes visible.

    Any suggestions please?

  • I’m not sure where you’re seeing that wording, but the correct label for the feature is:

    Before a comment appears: Comment must be manually approved

    … and it’s at SETTINGS => DISCUSSION

    Thanks for the response.
    I can see the setting you mention but with that checked, comments are still shown.
    I want the comments hidden until I moderate them.

    Where are you seeing the comment?

    Note that the user who posted the comment may see it (along with the message that the comment is being held for moderation)… but it’s not published on the website and no one else will see it.

    Note also that if you want ALL comments to be moderated (even if the user has a previously approved comment), the second option in my screenshot should be unchecked.

    If your settings are correct yet the comment is indeed getting posted publicly on your site, then your theme or perhaps a plugin may be interfering with the WordPress user roles and capabilities. In that case, you’ll need to disable all plugins and switch to one of the default themes and troubleshoot the source of the problem.

    And to answer your specific original question, the phrase “An administrator must always approve the comment” is how the same feature shown above was labeled in earlier versions of WordPress (see below). It’s the exact same setting/feature… just the labeling has changed.

    I am seeing the comment under the blog post so I’ll try what you’ve suggested and post back.
    Thank you
