AMP Visits In GA
-
Hi,
Visits to our AMP urls are being reported with a ‘PAGE TITLE’ of ‘(not set)’ in Google Analytics.
Any way to correct this?
Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out. As Site Kit inserts the Analytics snippet on your AMP URLs in the same manner as a manual insertion I suspect this is not specific to the Site Kit plugin. I will however test this from my side and let you know if I can find out more on this.
In the meantime can you confirm whether the same issue occurs if you switch the AMP mode to “Transitional”, or one of the plugins reader mode themes such as Twenty Twenty One?
Hi James,
Many thanks for looking into this for us.
I tried switching over to AMP Reader Twenty Twenty One but it didn’t seem to solve the issue instantly. But maybe that could be a caching situation, no?
In the meantime, I’ve been checking the setup with the Chrome Google Tag Assistant extension and things don’t look right, either on AMP or non-AMP, actually.
On non-AMP the Google Tag Assistant finds 2 GA tags with 1 suggestion. The Global site tag (gtag.js) is green – but there is another Google Analytics tag in blue which says ‘Non-standard implementation’.
On AMP pages, the extension finds 1 GA tag with 2 errors. The Google Analytics tag is in red. Errors are: “An error occurred while the tag was fired: net::ERR_ABORTED” “Same web property ID is tracked twice.” and (again) “Non-standard implementation”
Surely, that’s not an indication of things being correctly implemented by the Site Kit plugin, is it?
Any ideas what’s going wrong?
Thanks again,
Barry
Thanks for the update. You can disregard the notices within the Tag Manager Chrome extension. We’re aware of some reporting which can be confusing, in particular with AMP URLs. I can’t be sure when the extension will be updates but they do have their own Help Center whereby they should be able to assist.
I’ll also report back to you after testing Analytics with the legacy reader mode theme. While you’ve since checked using a different reader theme you may also wish to use the real time report while checking your site from a browser incognito window (so you’re not logged in), and checking the page title from there.
Thanks James. Good to be aware that those Tag Assistant errors/warning might not be completely accurate.
I was logged out when checking the alternative reader mode theme (while viewing the GA real time report) but I’ll try in incognito too.
Cheers!
I’ve just tested Site Kit with the legacy reader mode theme and I’ve been unable to recreate the same experience.
If you use the Analytics live reporting tool on an AMP URL please check your site once more with any SEO plugins temporarily deactivated. It might also be worthwhile creating a new post and visiting that post before checking if the same issue occurs.
Okay, thanks James. I’ll try your recommendations and update here if I manage to isolate the issue. Cheers!
Sure, let us know if you run into any issues. I can keep this support topic open for a few days while you check.
Thank you! I think your suspicions about SEO plugins are correct.
I disabled Yoast, cleared the cache and took a look at GA live reporting.
There were still page titles being reported as ‘not set’ but I guess that’s because most of them were being viewed via Google AMP URLs which are still cached?
I searched Google for one of the terms we rank well for from my phone and clicked into the result. It was still reporting as ‘not set’ in GA, but it was a Google AMP (cached) page, not actually the page on our site. As soon as I then visited our own URL rather than Google’s cached version, the page title appeared correctly in GA.
Then a few other AMP page visits from other users started displaying page titles, rather than ‘not set’, but they were the ‘raw’ page titles – ie not the SEO titles in Yoast. So, I think that sort of proves the issue – if you are still following me ??
Sorry for the long, rambling update report…but I’m sort of just seeing if you think it makes some sort of logical sense, James?
Now, what to do about it…
Thanks for the update, interesting findings. While I don’t have extensive experience testing the different SEO plugins I believe some may overwrite your WordPress defined titles. This is most likely cause in your situation, in particular based on the testing you’ve done.
If you find the URLs are still appearing without a title it may be best to performing additional testing on a newly created URL as opposed to a previously tested URL, with any SEO plugins temporarily deactivated.
In addition to the above it’s worth noting that Google can generate an appropriate title for your content (additional information), although I don’t think that’s related as there certainly wouldn’t be a blank title suggested.
Let me know if you need any additional information on this, or alternatively I’ll close this support topic as it’s not specific to Site Kit.
Great, thanks again for helping me troubleshoot this far James. I’ll mark this as resolved now!
No problem, thanks for alerting us to this possibility. Very useful to know indeed should other users encounter this same experience.
If you have a moment we’d love to hear how you’re finding the plugin so far, with user feedback always important, in particular as an AMP user.
Done!
