AMP page validity without image?

That’s correct! Blog posts without at least one image is not valid for AMP.

This is because AMP displays an image in search results. Here’s a screenshot on how AMP pages appear in Google search results https://www.wired.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/amp_search_results_green.jpg

The image is used as part of the search result, so AMP pages without at least one image will not be indexed by Google.
