I recently updated the AMP for WordPress plugin in our site and changed to the Reader template.

Our Adsense ads immediately disappeared. I’ve followed the Google instructions for putting them back on the page, using the Insert Headers and Footers plugins, and the relevant codes appear to be in the header and footer of the source code on AMP pages, but still no ads are showing.

AdSense support didn’t help and sent me in your direction, so I’m hoping you can tell me what’s going wrong.

    Thanks

  • From inspecting your site I can confirm the correct ad code snippets appear on your site. From various tests I do encounter some ads on your AMP URLs, in most cases in the header, and on a mobile device.

If you’re finding you don’t see as much ads as you would like there are many reasons why this may be the case. Unfortunately we can only assist with AMP plugin related queries. The product experts at the AdSense Help Center should be able to assist with this query. I’m unsure of where you previously directed this question although the correct Auto Ads for AMP is inserted into your AMP URLs.

Sorry we can’t be of more assistance. You may also like to try the Site Kit plugin if you prefer not to manually insert ad code snippets each time. The plugin can insert Auto ads code on your AMP and canonical site alike.

I recently changed my AMP plugin from AMP for WP to AMP (the official plugin). I used ‘header’ inserter to show Adsense Auto Ads, which worked fine with the previous AMP plugin (both desktop and mobile).
So far (day 2), Auto Ads do not appear in AMP version of my website but work ok with desktop.
Any ideas how long it takes for ads to appear?
    Thanks.

I can’t be sure how long Auto ads for AMP take in general, based on other users reports it can take a couple of days, the AdSense Help Center should be able to assist.

You could try a plugin such as Advanced Ads or AdInserter to place single ad units in the meantime, while using some of the available configurations to place on preferred content areas. I believe single ad units are used with the other AMP plugin you mentioned.

Thanks for your response James, but our problem still hasn’t been resolved and the AdSense guys keep telling me to talk to the developers, so I feel like I’m being bounced between two teams.

Basically, looking at the reports, the revenue from high-end mobile devices has completely dried up. I simply don’t understand why, if – as you say – the AMP tags are appearing where they should be.

I understand, it’s not ideal. I can’t be sure why there are such delays on your site but what you could do is enable AMP on some URLs or content types only, until you see Auto Ads appearing.

Alternatively you can insert single ad units using a plugin such as Advanced Ads or AdInserter, which have features to insert these ads across multiple positions and content types.

While we don’t have access to your AdSense details I will also bring this up with the team. Sorry we can’t be of more assistance.

    Hi James,

Having followed your advice, I used AdInserter to place Adsense Ads manually on our pages, given that Autoads didn’t work and nobody in support seemed to know why.

That worked, but now I’m getting warnings in the Google Search console, warning of “An AMP component ‘script’ tag is present more than once in the document.”

The tag in question is <script async custom-element=”amp-ad”>
</script>, which is part of the code for AMP ads that Google AdSense provides!

Why is this showing as an error?

That’s good to hear ads you working with single ad units. Unfortunately I can’t be sure of how the Auto ads logic works, the validation warning however may be as a result of the plugin in use. Can you check the plugin settings? As can remove the header script within that plugin to remove the warning.
