• I write two blogs and get a lot of visits from Amazonaws and ColoCrossing ip addresses.

My pages are set so that no one can subscribe, become a user or comment. There isn’t much a spammer can do to my sites. The blogs are there just for reading.

The ip addresses from these sites show up just like any other ip address and don’t try to login over and over again. Is there a chance these visits are genuine readers? I get some news feed traffic also. Is there a chance some of this is news feed traffic? I know a lot of blogs don’t like traffic from these sites.

Most of the traffic I see from AWS/EC2 sites are bots either scanning or actively trying to hack. If it’s news feed traffic, your logs will show them hitting /feed/ regularly.

There is one oddity that I forgot to mention. Often they are google referrals.

+1 for what Steve said. Those are bots. Both ColoCrossing and AWS are hosting providers. We track a significant amount of bad traffic from ColoCrossing.

The referrer can be faked, so even if it says it’s a Google referral, it doesn’t mean it’s human.
