am i the only person who doesn’t like the concept of widgets?

  • how it’s been before:

    i install a plugin. a tiny scrap of code i put into my sidebar.php, wham, there it is, working. i can customize my sidebar as i want, putting in mini loops, customized category listings, etc.

    how it seems to be with widgets:

    i no longer have control of my sidebar. instead, anything i want to be in my sidebar HAS to be a widget, which means anything i want to put in my sidebar i have to turn into a widget. this seems like a lot more work for me.

    it’s quite possible, however, that i’m misunderstanding, that instead it is possible to have customize your sidebar.php file, and use widgets at the same time.

  • you can put stuff in your sidebar out side of the if function exists bit. for example, always display a certain search box using a php call, but because it is outside the endif, it displays even with widgets activated.

    im not too keen on them though, just because their XHTML doesnt always validate, things in the original download like no
    <ul> start tags etc. i think they’re due for a re-release though, so maybe increased functionality.

    but dont forget that they are designed so that people dont even need to know how to edit their php files.

    It is possible, yes, however you could also just use my PHP Widget, which will let you simply type the relevant “scrap of code” directly into the widget’s config box, thus letting you make a cheap and instant widget.

    No, he is not. I remember reading a long thread (while searching for something) where a lot of people were expressing their dislike for widgets.
    Actually, I don’t use them either, although I installed widgets for friends who don’t want to mess with code. For them is a perfect solution.

    I think widgets are great — for everyone I support.

    But for me? They drive me nuts. ??

    Quite. They’re a nifty solution for people who don’t want or need to learn how to make XHTML do what they want.

    I tried them on a test site, and decided I prefer doing things the “old fashioned” way…

    One of the best things about WordPress is that flexibility ??

    They’re are pain the ass for those who need to translate their blogs and they play havoc with accentuated caracters. Never had such problems with the old way.

    Nah, wrong. I dislike them too. They’re the McDonalds of WP.

    I hate widgets because you either need to adopt the WP default nested lists from hell or the Kubrick mess. There is no other choice for marking up your sidebar. And do not get me started on the CSS issues.

    Widgets???

    Naaa…..

    Widgets are great for people who aren’t expert in PHP/HTML And yes, if you know a bit more about PHP/HTML they are nuisance (non-valid output etc etc).

    I’d hate to agree completely with the developers of WP, but that’s why they are there…
